Question Yourself – 1 Nephi 16:29

“Question Yourself” is a series of posts that I hope will help us “search ourselves” as we search the scriptures. My method is simple: I just record one or several questions that popped into my mind when I read a certain scripture. In fact, most of the questions just echo the text directly! (and perhaps they are the most effective ones) I hope you gain more insight about yourself and the gospel as you consider your answers.

 ~1 Nephi 16:29~

Context: In this Book of Mormon verse, Nephi talks about the Liahona. The Liahona was a curious navigational instrument provided by the Lord to help guide Nephi and his family to the promised land. The Liahona worked according to the faith and diligence and heed given to it.

“And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things.”

Question Yourself: By what “small means” has the Lord brought to pass “great things” in my life?

Comments

  1. I sometimes wonder if those “small means” i.e the Liahona was anything like the smartphones we have today! In my life there have been numerous situations where a small prompting has led to great things in my life.

  2. I was going to finish my comment with an example of an experience but posted too early. A vouple of days have gone by and I had an awesome experience that I just have to share:
On President’s Day, Angelica, the boys and I went to IKEA to do what any good Swede would do on a public holiday- eat some meatballs, get lost in the maze that is the Showroom, and buy some pickled herring at checkout! We got there and the place was PACKED, never seen so many people there…after a vouple of attempts to go in we decided to just go elsewhere. We tried Home Goods and a consignment store but no luck there either. We cut our losses and headed to Costco- because we planned to some furniture at IKEA we had taken two cars down there. At Costco we bought a couple of items and $180 later we were headed home! When we got to the Camry, Angelica said: You have the keys for the Corolla, right ? No, I didnt… The Corolla only has one key, mostly because when we bought back in 2009, I said that’s not a ptoblem I will make a copy of that key…In addition, the Corolla does not have central locks…Yes, we manually lock this car like we were living in the 1970s!!
I packed up the Camry and knowing tgat i had manually locked every door on the Corolla before giving the keys to Angelica to feed Linus, I knew my only chance was that Angelica had not locked the front door…I dreaded having to call the locksmith, with two unhappy little kids and a failed IKEA trip behind us…
As I drove over to where the Camry was parked, I said a quick prayer. I rushed out of my car hoping that Angelica had not locked the front door…I tugged on the door and….
It was locked! Oh well, i guess it was bound to happen..then Angelica and the kids arrived and Angelica asked if I could see the keys; I couldn’t…
Then Angelica tugged on the rear door and IT OPENED!! But I knew I locked it…We found the keys on the floor and were able to get the kids home!!
This was definitely a small thing but to me it meant a great deal and I am thankful for the small things that the Lord does for us on a daily basis. I am also thankful for this blog and “the small” thpughts and quotes that really enlighten my days!
