QuestionYourselfD&C19-38

~Doctrine and Covenants 19:38~

Context: In this revelation given through the prophet Joseph Smith to Martin Harris, the Lord teaches an important principle.

Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessing—yea, even more than if you should obtain treasures of earth and corruptibleness to the extent thereof.

Question Yourself: Am I guilty of thinking material blessings – those involving “treasures of the earth” – are some of the greatest blessings the Lord can bestow on me? What are some of the non-material blessings the Lord might be referring to? Am I currently enjoying any of these blessings and recognizing them as such?

Context: In this revelation given through the prophet Joseph Smith, the Lord provides an important piece of instruction.

Build upon my rock, which is my gospel

Question Yourself: How can I better build my life on the gospel? What kind of “buildings” have I erected on that gospel rock, and are any of them in need of a fresh coat of paint, significant repair, or even complete restoration/rebuilding? Am I asking the Lord to help me design and maintain these edifices? Are they pleasing to Him, and do they honor Him sufficiently?

~Doctrine and Covenants 123:17~

Context: In this letter to the early members of the church, the Prophet Joseph Smith (who was wrongfully incarcerated in Liberty Jail at the time) gives an important piece of instruction.

Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

Question Yourself: Do I cheerfully(!) do all things that lie in my power, or do I expect God to “reveal his arm” without much effort on my part? On the other hand, do I allow God to step in and help me with my needs? How can I become better at standing still, with the utmost assurance as I wait for God’s help, instead of being a frazzled, insecure mess?
